THOMAS WILSON
c1767-1821
c1767-1821
Thomas Wilson son of Robert and Eleanor (Carothers) Wilson was born about 1767 in Mecklenburg Co. NC. He was married to Margaret, who's maiden name is unknown. Thomas Wilson died in October 1821 in Williamson Co. TN and Margaret died before April 1828.
It is believe by some people Thomas was married first to Ann Miller, in Mecklenburg County on 11 March 1796 however at the time of his death in 1821, his wife was named Margaret. There are at least two DAR applications which state Thomas, who married Ann Miller, was the son of Robert and Eleanor (Carothers) Wilson and their son, John G. Wilson was born 1807 and lived and died in Mecklenburg County, NC. These DAR applications apparently were not based on doucmentation but rather by family stories and conclusions.
On 8 Nov 1797, Thomas Wilson sold 160 acres of land in Mecklenburg Co. NC which had been conveyed to him in his father's will. On 7 Sep 1802, Thomas Wilson purchased from David Wilson of Sumner Co. TN and William Wilson of Wilson Co. TN 117 acres on the water of Harpeth River in Williamson Co. TN. The 1820 census for Williamson Co. TN shows there were at least nine children in the family. He was listed adjacent to Josiah Wilson, Joseph Wilson and Jane Wilson. (his two brothers and mother)
Provisions were laid off for the widow Margaret Wilson in October 1821 and an inventory of the estate was presented in October Court Session 1821 by Peggy Wilson and A. A. Wilson the administrators of the estate. Thomas Wilson owned land in Williamson County and Bedford County. Tennessee.
An account of the sales for the estate of Margaret Wilson deceased was presented April term 1828. Samuel Scales adm. In January 1831 Richard C. Hancock was appointed guardian of three minor children, Samuel, Thomas and Matilda. In 1836 Richard C. Hancock was removed as guardian of Thomas Wilson because said Hancock had left Tennessee. Thomas Wilson was the ward of Aaron A. Wilson 1836-1839.
In April 1828 a partition for the estate of Thomas Wilson, who died intestate, was presented in court stating he left a widow Margaret and children: Aaron A. Wilson, Joseph Wilson, Samuel Wilson, Thomas Wilson, Elvy Toney, wife of John Toney formerly Elvy Wilson, Polly Toney, formerly Polly Wilson, Jane Wilson, who is since dead, Elizabeth Wilson and Matilda Wilson, Aaron A. Wilson who is the Admr. of the estate. Nine children were named. An allotment of the lands was made January session 1829.

Lot #6 to Samuel Wilson

Children of Thomas Wilson:
1. Aaron A. Wilson born about 1800 was probably the oldest child in the family. He married Selica Webb 1 Nov 1821 in Williamson Co. TN, and L.B. (Littleberry)Toney was the bondsman. Aaron A. Wilson was listed on the 1830 census in Williamson Co. TN. It would seem he moved to Henry Co. TN before 1840 where Aaron A. and Seclucy Wilson were listed on the 1850 census. However another family also claims this man Aaron A. and his wife as Selita Corbet, daughter of Priscilla Corbet who was also listed in the household in 1850. Descendants of this couple have posted information on Find A Grave stating Aaron A. Wilson died 1866 and he and his wife Selita Corbett Wilson are buried in the Fisher Cemetery, Henry Co. TN.

Moses Wilson
1769-1849
1769-1849
Moses Wilson is believed to be the eleventh son of Robert and Eleanor Carothers Wilson. He never married and according to his tombstone in Wilson Cemetery, Chapel Hill, Tennessee he died 18 Jul 1850. His estate was administered by James M. Wilson , Marshall Co. TN Bk. B-95 31 Dec 1852.
Tombstone inscription:
Wilson Cemetery, Chapel Hill Tennessee
In Memory of Moses Wilson
Born Jul 1769
Died July 18, 1850
"A bachelor and 11th son of
R & E Wilson of NC"
On 31 Jul 1848, Moses Wilson gave a deposition for the Widow's Pension of his sister-in-law Jane McDowell Wilson. In this document Moses stated he was born "about the year 1769". According to this, Moses was about 79 years old in 1848.
The 1850 Mortality census states Moses Wilson died in July, age 84 in Marshall County of Cholic. According to the rules, the 1850 Mortality schedule enumerates the individuals who had died in the year previous to the census year, between June 1849 and May 1850. This would mean Moses Wilson died in July 1849 and if he was 84 years old at the time of death, he was born in 1765-1766. Death certificates and tombstones are considered "after the fact information" and are often provided by someone close to the deceased who may or may not have known the exact dates based on their memory.

Unknown Son
It is frequently stated in the Wilson family history there were eleven sons in the family of Robert and Eleanor (Carothers) Wilson. However, there is documentation for only ten sons.
Buried in Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery is David Wilson who died 27 Aug 1771 age 22 years and buried in Plot 5DE.
Because Robert and Eleanor Wilson lived in the area of Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, this young man born, 1748-1749, could be the eleventh son who is missing in the records.
Besides being a son of Robert and Eleanor Wilson, David Wilson who was born in 1748-49, David could be a son of Zaccheus Wilson Sr. who was an early settler in 1754 on Sugar Creek in the neighborhood of of Steele Creek Presbyterian Church. This Zaccheus Wilson moved to Oglethorpe County GA in 1794 where he died in 1795.
Mrs. Frances Powell Otken wrote two books on the Lea Family in 1952 & 1957 and one book on the Wilson Family in 1958. WorldCat reports only one issue of the Wilson Family book is available which is at the Tennessee State Archive, Nashville, Tennessee.
Mrs. Frances Powell Otken apparently at some time wrote that a son of Robert and Eleanor Wilson had been killed by Indians before 1793, which is the year Robert Wilson wrote his will. No sources or records were stated in connection to this claim, and no event such as this has ever been mentioned in the history of the Robert and Eleanor Wilson family. The only statement often found is there were eleven sons in the family.
