Exploring the history and genealogy of Ten Wilson Brothers from
Mecklenburg County, North Carolina
This website is a reconstruction of my earlier site, no longer available, named Wilsons of Williamson County, Tennessee. Researched and maintained by Paulette Haynes.
Below are listed ten sons of Robert "Old Robin" Wilson and Eleanor Carothers of Steele Creek, Mecklenburg Co. NC. It is believed (but not proven) Robert Wilson was born around 1725 (or between 1717 & 1730) in Newville, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania depending on which genealogy you find. The town of Newville, Cumberland County was not established until 1790 and Cumberland County, Pennsylvania was established 1750 from Lancaster County. Any early records before 1750 for this family would be found in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Robert Wilson was a resident of Mecklenburg County, NC in 1755. It appears Robert and Eleanor were already married before they settled in Mecklenburg County and the first three or four children were born in Pennsylvania.
Robert's will was written 14 Dec 1793 and probated in Mecklenburg County Court on 27 January 1794.
Eleanor Wilsons' estate was presented in court on 26 April 1802. The Daughters of the American Revolution have placed a memorial monument in the Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery where it is believed both were buried. This older memorial monument was replaced in 2018.
Many family genealogies state there were eleven sons in the Wilson family, but only ten have been identified and documented. Seven of these sons are known to have participated in the Revolutionary War, and ten are known to have moved to middle Tennessee in the area of southeast Williamson County near Harpeth River.
1. Joseph Wilson born about 1749
2. Aaron Wilson born about 1751
3. John Wilson born about 1753
4. James Wilson born 25 Sep 1757
5. Robert Wilson born 1760
6. Samuel Wilson born about 1762
7 . Zaccheus Wilson born Nov 1765 (the 7th son)
8. Josiah Wilson born Oct 1766
9 . Thomas Wilson born about 1767
10. Unknown (possibly the oldest son; more about him later)
11. Moses Wilson born July 1769 (the 11th son)
